Is multilingualism a lived reality in Europe's language sector?

Or is there a real discrepancy between what Europe's language sector says about multilingualism and language diversity and what it actually does in practice?

This debate will tackle issues such as multilingualism and language diversity within the European language sector, the use of English as the lingua franca within the sector and the apparent discrepancy between discourse and practice within the sector itself as well as outside it (e.g. with people such as policymakers, clients and the public).

The aim of the session is to bring together language sector association executives, professionals and interested stakeholders for a debate on the above issues.

As a participant, you will take part in an open and structured debate inspired by the World Café model.

'Europe’s linguistic landscape is increasingly diverse. It encompasses standardized national languages (taught to both L1 and L2 learners), regional minority languages and dialects, home and heritage languages, as well as learned/taught foreign non-European languages.
Language education has been a key pillar in European education policy, which endorses the importance of plurilingual and intercultural education for democratic culture. In addition to the longstanding policy aim of European Union citizens gaining proficiency in two additional languages, an important principle of the recommendation relates to language awareness.

The 8th edition of the LiDi conference series focuses on a specific perspective to raise such language awareness in the European education systems, which can be summarized as linguistic awareness—an approach where contents and insights of the academic discipline of linguistics (both theoretical linguistics and psycholinguistics) are adapted to pre-university language classrooms. Linguistic awareness will ultimately result in language awareness, which advances the students’ consciousness of different forms and functions of language and promotes analytical, critical, and science-based thinking.

The workshop will bring together leading experts who are already involved in relevant initiatives in their own countries, but who do not yet have a joint platform to cooperate and interact with each other at a European level. The goal is to shift the focus from views where knowledge about language is mostly regarded as an instrument (subservient to the development of literacy) to a perspective valuing knowledge about linguistic concepts itself for their societal and cultural significance.'

Tijdens de online ELV Masterclass op maandag 13 april vertelt Miet Ooms over de verschillen in het Nederlands van Belgen en van Nederlanders. Aan de hand van voorbeelden uit verschillende genres geeft ze een overzicht van verschillen in woordenschat, morfologie, syntaxis en registers. Ze laat zien in wat voor teksten die vooral spelen en hoe we er bij vertalingen mee om kunnen gaan.

In deze workshop leer je slimmer zoeken in Delpher, een databank met ruim 130 miljoen pagina’s uit Nederlandse kranten, boeken en tijdschriften uit de periode 1618-2005. Ook leer je hoe je bij dergelijk historisch onderzoek slim gebruik kunt maken van AI (met name ChatGPT en Google Notebook LM).

This conference explores the evolving role of translation in a rapidly changing world. Key questions: Who is translation for? Who is doing the translating? The conference examines how translation audiences are changing, the role of technology (including AI) and accessibility, and what this means for the visibility of human translation in today's society, and for training.

This conference is part of the Traductologie de plein champ series. It brings together translation scholars, translation teachers, professionals, and students around topics of common interest. 'Linguistic barriers exacerbate the already formidable challenges of responding to humanitarian crises, particularly — but not exclusively — in conflict zones. In the past decade alone armed conflicts worldwide have inflicted untold suffering on large populations and often resulted in mass displacement.

Addressing the needs of those affected by war and violence necessitates the involvement of large numbers of translators and interpreters, many of whom are frequently untrained volunteers. In addition to the immediate crisis response, people with, or seeking, refugee and/or asylum seeker status require sustained access to translation and interpreting support in host countries, both in order to access basic services and to enable their integration into local communities.'

This event brings together translators, interpreters, scholars, NGO representatives, and volunteers to develop a deeper understanding of the complex demands and realities involved in translating conflict and refuge. The aim is to create a space for meaningful exchange as well as to generate concrete opportunities for collaboration.
