'The world's linguistic landscape is rapidly evolving, with a concerning trend of language endangerment, marginalization, and loss. Linguists estimate that between 50% and 90% of the approximately 7,000 languages currently spoken may be severely endangered or entirely lost by the end of this century.

This alarming acceleration of language death is largely attributed to cultural, political, and economic marginalization, as well as the rise of globalization, global imperialism, and forced migration due to conflict, war, and the impacts of climate change.

The disappearance of a language represents the loss of a unique cultural and intellectual heritage, encompassing traditional knowledge, historical perspectives, and modes of expression.

In addition to the ethical and cultural implications, language endangerment has significant consequences for our understanding of human cognition and linguistic diversity, as languages are the most powerful expressions of a people, their culture, and traditions. Each language encodes a unique system of knowledge, categorization, and expression, and its loss diminishes the scope of human thought and creativity.'

This two-day digital workshop brings together a highly diverse group of international experts dedicated to the documentation and study of endangered and minoritized languages worldwide.

'In this webinar Zalan Meggyesi and Peter Argondizzo explore client lifecycles across three phases: pre-translation, mid-translation, and post-translation.
In the pre-translation phase, a frequency analysis model supported by LLMs identifies glossary terms automatically during content extraction. This approach ensures that custom, impactful terminology guides machine translation (MT) from the outset.
The mid-translation phase applies automatic MT for a quick first pass, followed by AI-powered quality evaluation to prioritize sections that require human review. LLM-generated suggestions aid in enhancing flagged segments, allowing for focused human intervention that maintains original voice and style.
In the post-translation phase, low-quality machine translations are refined by human translators, using LLM recommendations, and the revised content is fed back into the MT engine to continuously improve performance.

The key takeaway is that AI enhances human expertise by reducing repetitive tasks, streamlining proofreading and review, and allowing translators to focus on nuanced linguistic challenges.'

In both signed and spoken conversations, recipients constantly give multimodal feedback—such as nods, gestures, facial expressions, or vocal cues like “mm” or “yeah.” These signals show engagement, understanding, and readiness to respond, while also helping manage the flow and quality of interaction.

Multimodal feedback is key to understanding how people communicate across languages, individuals, and contexts. Yet, many links between feedback and other interactional mechanisms—like backchannels, repairs, and alignment—remain underexplored.

LingCologne 2025 will spotlight these mechanisms, with a focus on vocal, manual, and non-manual cues used in conversation. The conference centres on four core themes: Backchannels, Alignment, Repair, and Turns, and features talks from eight leading scholars in the field.
